Are Drain Flies Harmful

Drain flies are very frustrating. They come through the sewer when they smell food and can be a serious frustration to everyone in the house. The good news is they cannot harm you, they do not bite humans and they do not carry any kind of human transferable disease. However, they are not clean and if they land on your food they will dirty it and if eaten could cause food poisoning. This is about the worst thing that can happen with drain flies. Now the way to deal with them is giving your whole kitchen a very thorough deep cleaning. If that doesn’t work then you may need to call the city about the sewer near your home.

A great test a lot of people can try is taking a piece of tape and putting it over the sink drain. Make sure it covers it fully, use two pieces if needed. Then go to sleep. When you wake up take the tape off and see how many you caught. This will help you understand how many of them are entering your home a day and how serious you have to be about getting rid of them. It may seem intimidating but there are ways of getting rid of them for good.

clean up dishesThe very first step is to see if you have left anything in the sink. Dirty dishes are a guaranteed way to get drain flies interested in your home. So clean up all the dishes and cutlery and pots and pans and then scrub the sink clean. You will also need to get a drain scrub brush that you can use to scrub inside the drain itself. This will be very effective in getting rid of build up in the drain pipe. You can then boil a big pot of water, make sure it’s boiling vigorously. Mix into it half a cut of salt and half a cup of baking soda and mix it around really well. You can also add a cup of vinegar, white is best, dump it into the boiling concoction. Then get your oven mitts and pick the pot up very carefully and slowly pour the whole thing down the drain, making sure it gathers in the wink to form a pool while you pour. This should do it. After this, if you are still seeing the flies come out of the drain then you will have to take the next steps because whatever the issue is you will not be able to easily reach it without having to use a dangerous chemical like drain cleaner, which is a powerful acid and increases the pH level of the water in the sewer system and then eventually of the planets freshwater.

If you need to use a chemical drain cleaner try getting something natural like Bio-clean which comes in a bulk container of powder you can mix with water. It is efficient and safe for the environment. XIONLAB also sells a very safe drain cleaner that will not raise the pH of the sewer and our freshwater supply.
