How To Make a Rat Trap With a Bucket

Rats are one of the most pernicious and destructive pests in the world. The united nations classify them on the same level of danger to humanity as global warming and until 2008 major cities would have to treat sewers for rats. This ended due to the financial meltdown of 2008. There was so little money for government services that anything and everything was cancelled. From lice checks in schools to baiting the sewers with rat poison and pigeons with strychnine. Instead, the people of the major cities of the world were left to their own devices to handle rat tissues that were now showing up everywhere. Commercial treatments were well beyond the destitute people who live in the inner city so they would have to use domestic methods or if they are smart. They will build an effective trap themselves.

The common rat, the Norway rat as it is known, is a ship rat that spread across the world with the advent of global shipping in Europe to other countries in the world. This would entice rats as the most common shipments were food, grains, nuts and unusual foods from far away. There were other things, silks and rum and spices but what the rats were after were the grain and nuts. This led to rats travelling massive distances and infesting foreign nations that had no defence against these dangerous and large rats. The world was quickly infested and has been since. Nothing humanity has tried has succeeded in exterminating the species.

If you have rats on your property then there are many things you can do. You should always start with preventative measures like removing any food sources on your property. This can be anything but is most often actual feeders. Bird feeders and animal feeders are dangerous and will attract other wild animals to your property. Even if it only attracts birds they can still enter your home and cause damage to it. Rodents like rats make use of tall grass to travel and gardens and bushes to hide in while they find or make openings into your home. Removing shrubs and plants from around your home and placing them in a separated garden far from your walls will save you a lot of headaches. Make sure to properly store your garbage as well. It is a major source of food for rodents. Rats can easily climb the side or leap from an adjacent tree to access the open garbage. They can also infest BBQs and will love your outdoor dinner parties. Every crumb on the ground will bring one more rat to your yard.

So how do you deal with a rat infestation if it is already there? Prevention will always be your greatest weapon. Take away any sources of food and water on the property and you will have done a lot to sway them. However, if you replace that food with poison then you may just be in business. Removing food and replacing it with poison is what professionals do. They will take away access to food on the property by educating the customer. However, you can do this too. Using domestic grade poison you can kill rats on your property. Make sure to buy a tamper-proof bait station to put it in so that other animals do not eat the poison and die on your property.

rat trap using bucketIf you are truly strapped for cash then there is a trap you can build on your own from common household items. You will need a bucket, something for making holes in that bucket, string and a soda can, a plank of wood and, of course: peanut butter. You must fill the bucket about a quarter of the way with water and something to cut the smell of dead rats like floor cleaner. The rats will drown so do not worry about the floor cleaner hurting them. Drill two holes in the top rim of the bucket so they can have a string strung through them. Drill a hole in a soda can and thread the string through it. Fasten it to the bucket and put peanut butter on the can. Put the wood plank as a bridge to the bucket and watch as the rats die. They will go up the plank and step on the can to get the bait but will roll off it and land in the water. They can swim and hold their breath but eventually will drown in the water.
